SHE GAVE ME, I RECEIVED FROM HER | CLARA AMARAL
Clara Amaral
Duration: 60 minutes
She gave me, I received from her has as its central theme five generations of women in Clara Amaral's family and focuses on her grandmother, who could neither read nor write. What could be understood as a detail within the family reveals itself as a sociocultural context that many women in Portugal had to face until the reform of the education system in 1950, which changed the situation of exclusion of women due to their gender and social status.
She gave me, I received from her
A poem that choreographs her hands and voice.
Her voice reading aloud,
the book,
become a script,
become a performance,
become an archive.
The permanence of her voice, in the book.
In the book,
(the absence) and presence of their names.
She gave me, I received from her is a book and a choreography, read aloud and handled by a performer.
