At this special event, we celebrate Kepa Junkera — and he will be joined by several musicians who have collaborated with him over the last few decades, namely Celina da Piedade, Ana Santos, Tó Zé Bexiga (Raia) and Mara, as well as the Lourinhã Municipal Choir, conducted by Maestro Carlos Alves.
Kepa Junkera is widely recognised as the most prominent and internationally celebrated Basque musician of today. Winner of the 2004 Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album for his album K, he is often described as someone who has blurred physical and musical boundaries, bringing together traditions and sounds from different geographical areas. He has a long, intense and fruitful artistic relationship with Portugal, built through numerous projects with Portuguese musicians, such as Lau Eskutara, which he recorded with Júlio Pereira, or Ath-Thurda, the result of an artistic residency with various musicians in Évora.
His career, which was abruptly interrupted in 2018 due to a stroke, has been reborn through new forms of artistic expression, including the book Berpiztu/Renascer, in which various visual artists revisit his discography, and the documentary of the same name, which will be screened in its entirety at the National Music Museum, marking its premiere in Portugal.
During the session, he will donate a tambourine from his personal collection to the National Music Museum, an instrument that accompanied him in recordings and multiple concerts.
