Housed in a building that was once the Episcopal Palace, the Museu do Abade de Baçal, in Bragança, opened its doors to the public in 1927, twelve years after its creation.
Classified as a Property of Public Interest, the building houses a large part of the collection of the former Episcopal Palace on permanent display. The collection of sacred art was joined by the collections of the Municipal Museum of Bragança and the pieces collected by its first director, who would give the museum its name, Abade de Baçal, and Raúl Teixeira, who succeeded him in the position.
Artworks from archaeology, numismatics, epigraphy and ethnography became part of the Museum's collection and illustrate the history of the Northeast Transmontano region over the centuries.
More recently, the collection of masks on display allows visitors to see an important ritual complex of the traditional festive cycle specific to the region, classified by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2019.
Also noteworthy is the presence of painters Silva Porto, José Malhoa, Aurélia de Sousa and Veloso Salgado in the Museum's collections, as well as the two series of original drawings by Almada Negreiros, in Indian ink on paper, produced in the 1930s and 1940s and which represent an extremely important, albeit lesser-known, facet of his vast graphic work.
