Paris, Montmartre, the Moulin Rouge. The film tells a tragic love story set to the sounds of pop, rock and techno music, just as director Baz Luhrmann had done with “Romeo + Juliet”. Christian (Ewan McGregor) is an Englishman who had a middle-class upbringing and arrives in Paris dreaming of becoming a writer or poet. In Montmartre, with T. Rex’s “Children of the Revolution” playing in the background, he meets a group of bohemian Parisian artists, led by the painter Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, who introduce him to the pleasures of absinthe and the French cabaret. They suggest that Christian write a play for the Moulin Rouge. And it is there that he meets Satine (Nicole Kidman), the most beautiful courtesan in Paris, during a meeting with the cabaret’s manager. Christian pretends to be a duke and quickly falls in love with Satine. But the real duke, who is wealthy, turns up and wants to marry Satine at any cost…
