Composed between the summers of 1903 and 1904, Gustav Mahler’s (1860–1911) Symphony N.º 6 in A minor is one of the composer’s most intense, sombre and psychologically complex symphonic works and, for many, his most overwhelming masterpiece. In contrast to his other symphonies, where transcendence prevails, here darkness prevails, leading the listener through a narrative that advances without compromise, emotional landscapes of relentless fate and a fall without redemption. In this sense, it is a symphony whose tragic meaning arises above all from the musical material itself. Premiered on 27 May 1906 at the Saalbau in Essen, the title would emerge at the Vienna premiere on 4 January 1907, where it was listed as the Sixth Symphony (Tragic).
