La pazienza di Socrate — comic opera

Everything is ready for the modern premiere of the complete third act (the only surviving act) of La pazienza di Socrate, written by Francisco António de Almeida, a Portuguese composer of the early 18th century.
Between 1722 and 1726, Almeida was among the musicians sent by the Portuguese Crown to study with the finest Italian masters of the period, as part of King João V's cultural policy, which sponsored the training of many musicians, painters, woodcarvers, and architects in Rome.
Musicologist João de Freitas Branco once stated that, "without false patriotism, the quality of his music stands alongside the very best comic operas being composed in Europe at the time." This is also one of the earliest known Portuguese comic operas. Come and discover it!
