Inspired by the exhibition BEAUTIFULLY IMPERFECT, this talk brings together psychiatrist Henrique Prata Ribeiro, Inês Grosso, curator of the exhibition and Chief Curator of the museum, and Inês Pina, Coordinator of the Arts Education Service, to reflect on the psychological and social dimensions of Alice Neel’s work.
Over the course of more than five decades, the artist portrayed family members, neighbours, workers, immigrants, writers, activists, politicians, public figures, acquaintances and strangers alike, giving each person the same careful attention regardless of profession, background or social status. At the heart of Alice Neel’s paintings lies the complexity of each individual, in an act of resistance and affirmation of human existence.
Bridging art and mental health, this talk offers a perspective on Alice Neel’s portraits through the lens of psychiatry, exploring how the artist makes visible what is internal and, at times, elusive, revealing through each individual the diversity, contradictions and transformations of society.
